Are Women the Future of Golf

If you were asked what demographic might be the fastest growing segment in golf you may answer Boomer's or possibly Millennials or maybe even male juniors, but you would be wrong. Three times wrong. The simple fact is women are the fastest growing on course and off course segment of the golf industry. Don't take my word for it. Women might only make up approximately 24% of on course golfers, but off course, women account for 41%, While still having a long way to go till we see equal numbers of men and women on the course. The increase in women players won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

Within the junior’s level, more and more girls are starting and wanting to play golf beginning at a young age. According to the National Golf Foundation in 1995 girls made up only 17% of golfers in the junior’s division. Today girls proudly make up 1/3 of junior golfers.

Not only are there more women golfers today. There are approximately 29% of women that currently don not play golf but are wanting to learn and play, however feel intimidated to even step onto a course or walk into a pro shop. Initiatives from organizations like the National Golf Foundation have made it their mission to change that. They have started a campaign called #InviteHER. Where the main goal is to produce a welcoming environment for women to feel comfortable on the course, regardless of their playing level.

Although, even with campaigns to make golf more inclusive for women on the course, they are still being left out and excluded in the market place.

Next time you're in the pro-shop signing in for your round take a look around the shop you're standing in. Most likely you will see a slew of men's pro-line equipment for sale with the typical brand names. Then ask if the ladies are being fairly represented in the same manner? Last we checked the ladies are paying the same course and cart fees. So why are there so few choices on lady’s golf bags and equipment offerings? Check any market analysis and we can all agree that women are not afraid to spend money. According to Bloomberg, women make 85% percent of consumer purchases and influencer over 95% of good and services purchased. Nonetheless, in the golf industry women are left with few and limited options.

If you're a man reading this blog let me ask when was the last time you bought a new golf bag? If you're like most of us you probably waited until your clubs were about to fall out the bottom of your bag. Women are simply more practical. While men and women both require the same quality products, women enjoy variety and style in their equipment choices. Owning more than one golf bag, gloves and matching head covers is the new norm.
